PrerequisitesCOMPSCI 372 is the minimum prerequisite, together with good mathematics skills. You should be warned that the material in 715 is significantly more advanced than in 372, so you are advised not to embark on 715 if you do not have a good grasp of the material in 372. Also, communication skills are important: you need to be able to read and understand published papers, write your own reports, and participate in class seminars and discussions.
Texts You don't need to buy anything. Reference will be made to both Hill ("Computer Graphics Using OpenGL") and Foley, van Dam, Feiner and Hughes ("Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice"). These will be on desk copy in the library. Other material will come from lecture handouts and electronically accessible published papers.
Description This course continues on from 372, firstly covering some more basic graphics material and then moving onto studying some of the latest research papers in computer graphics. In the first half of the course, which is lecture-based, topics will include a selection from: advanced curves and surfaces; advanced ray tracing; visibility algorithms; image-based rendering; introduction to physically-based animation. The second half of the course is project-based, with a mix of individual and group assessments. Topics will be drawn from recent research papers in the field.
Forum A forum for class discussions is available at http://forums.cs.auckland.ac.nz/. Use this (with discretion) to discuss issues related to the course.
