QUESTION FOR WRITTEN ANSWER ON TUESDAY, 16 DECEMBER 1997
Jeanette FITZSIMMONS to the Prime Minister:
Are any of her officials, or staff of the Security Intelligence Service or
Government Communications Security Bureau, involved in a process
developing[sic] key escrow and digital telephony policies for New Zealand; if
so, what is the nature of this process, which Government agencies are involved,
have any papers been prepated to date on the subject and when is it expected
that recommendations will be put to Government?
ANSWER
Hon Jenny Shipley (Prime Minister) replied:
Beyond acknowledging the technical developments in the fields of key escrow and
digital telephony are relevant to the operations of both the New Zealand
Security Intelligence Service and the Government Communications Security
Bureau, and officials from my Department also have an interest in such matters
from the security perspective, it is my practice not to comment on matters
relating to security [1].
