It is our general practice to meet weekly for an hour or so, interpreted flexibly. The day and time is determined semester by semester, according to our several timetables and whatever other constraints apply. We usually meet only during lecturing times. ( If you want to know why, ask the others; the restriction means that it is never possible to find a time at which everyone can turn up during lecturing periods, and as we never meet at any other time our group is always diminished. But I just do what I'm told. )
In the second semester of 2006, we meet weekly on Mondays somewhat after 1.00 p.m. in university lecturing weeks.
Our meetings happen at Newman Hall, in the Seminar Room. That's on the Waterloo Quadrant level, on the right just about opposite the reception desk.
- or, if that's in use, we occasionally meet in the Chaplains' office on the same level, right at the back by the deck, on the right-hand side of the corridor.

Well, nothing now. We've finished our meetings for this semester, and turned into a pumpkin until next year.Next semester starts on 26 February 2007; no doubt relevant information will appear somewhere near here at around that time. |
The significance of life,
very loosely based on reflections stimulated by an article in the NZ Herald called "The Journey" in the paper for January 28, and "Brad McGann's treacherous journey to self discovery" on the Herald web site.
Design after Dover
Recent developments in the "Intelligent Design" arguments.
Redemption
- supported by a recorded BBC programme.
Redemption
which we started last week.
Some Catholic views on Intelligent Desisgn
A sequel to his talk on "Design after Dover" ( see above ), when we'll have more time to discuss the material.
( My diary tells me that it's also the World Day of Prayer. Alternative views are :
Friday, March 3rd 2006 : World Day of Prayer;
4 June 2006 : Global Day of Repentance & Prayer;
September 14, 2006 : Unity World Day of Prayer;
November 7, 2005 : Baptist Women's World Day of Prayer
Nobody except my diary seems to support April 3rd. )
We'll read through the chapter and talk about it. Annotated notes will be available.
We'll continue reading through the chapter, with discussion as appropriate. Annotated notes are available.
( Last week we got through all of one paragraph ! )
We'll continue reading through the chapter, with discussion as appropriate. Annotated notes are available.
Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton : chapter 2.
We'll continue reading through Chapter 2, with discussion as appropriate. We're something like half way through. It isn't that the discussion is particularly deep, but the writing is stimulating. It's fun, anyway. Annotated notes are available.
Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton : chapter 2.
We've reached about page 7 of the Annotated notes.
Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton : chapter 2,
from about half way down page 8 ( I think ) of the Annotated notes.
Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton : chapter 2,
from almost the end of page 8 ( I think ) of the Annotated notes.
Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton : chapter 3. YES, 3 !
from the beginning of the Annotated notes, WHICH DO NOT YET EXIST IN TOTO - but there's a slightly annotated file there now.
........ but apart from Mark only two people turned up. We decided to defer the fun for a week or two so that more could attend.
from about the top of page 3 of the Annotated notes. So far, they're annotated up to about the middle of page 4, but all being well I'll get a bit more done in time for the meeting.
I didn't, but there was animated discussion and we didn't get that far.
NOTE that we'll be back in the seminar room.
This time lots of people turned up. ( "Lots" is to be interpreted by Chaplaincy Network standards, but it was lots better than last time. )
from somewhere on page 4 ( I think ) of the Annotated notes. So far, they're annotated up to about the middle of page 4; I hope to get the rest done in time for the meeting, so try later rather than earlier.
Yes, I did get the notes done.
( Enthusiasts might like to inspect a not entirely neutral article. )
- which, on the evidence of September 25's discussion, might better be spelt "Feuerwöch".
( The last remark was a joke, which it seems was not widely understood. "Feuerwöch" is not, so far as I know, a German word; it's supposed to sound a bit like "fireworks". )
I mean well, but I'm unlikely to keep this page up to date week by week - if you want to find out what's happening, ask me to add you to the E-mail list.
More about the Chaplaincy Network ?
From time to time we might have a "current affairs session". The intention is to discuss current affairs from a Christian viewpoint, whatever that means. This does not include topics of general interest, presented as "What is the Christian position on <topic> ?"; at least we need a particular position as a starter.
The idea is therefore that anyone with a topic to raise should bring along a relevant newspaper cutting ( short and snappy for preference ) published during the previous week. Please mark the date of publication on the cutting. ( See below. )
In the interests of smooth running, we have some rules :
