Smooth-shaded displays of anatomy, beam, and dose surfaces can aid in the comprehension of the 3D geometry of a treatment design. Our work with very high-quality rendering of shaded images includes the ability to specify transparency, specularity, and multiple lights. Experience suggests that proper selection and adjustment of these attributes is important for effective results compared with simple opaque shading, and in fact may be required to fully understand nested objects such as anatomic structures inside dose surfaces. We have also found tha the ability to provide depth cues through fast interaction with the display in addition to high-quality rendition results in dramatic improvement in comprehension. We have explored a variety of mechanisms for providing animation including stereoscopy, videotape or framebuffer loops, and most recently true real-time interaction using the Pixel-Planes graphics engine. Initial results and findings will be presented.
