  • 10 October, 7.30am - 9am: NZISF breakfast meeting, registration required. Speaker: Mike Seddon, NZITF Board Member, Senior Network Security Consultant. Title: The Shepard Tone of Information Security. Abstract: Irrespective of whether you call it "Cyber" or "Information Security", we've all found ourselves in an industry that expands and evolves at an eye watering pace. This means the volume of information to learn can be both exciting and intimidating for those just entering the industry, but those of us who have been around a little longer should also think the exact same thing. New Zealand always punches above its weight in terms of innovation; this means opportunities for information security professionals are now opening up into industries previously not considered possible. As information security professionals, we now need to ask "which industry would you like to work in?" Telecommunications (5G), finance, autonomous vehicles, or maybe even the space industry. Infosec plays a major part in all of them. This presentation looks at the past, present, and possible future of information security and what it will take for all of us to remain part of the most exciting industry.
  • 12 September, 7.30am - 9am: NZISF breakfast meeting, registration required. Speaker: Chris Roberts, Head of Information Assurance and Cyber Security Research at New Zealand’s National Cyber Security Centre. Title: The Journey to the Cloud: Bridging the Chasm. Abstract: While the concept of "cloud": can trace its roots to the 1960's it was only in the 1990's that "cloud" as we now know it started to emerge. Since then various governments have adopted "Cloud First" then "Cloud Smart" policies. The reality of cloud implementation is more complex and a more complete understanding of the implications, consequences and advantages has not yet been fully developed. This presentation provides discussion on these aspects to assist organisations undertaking cloud migration or already using cloud.
  • 8 Aug, 7.30am - 9am: NZISF breakfast meeting, registration required. Speaker: Dean Carter, infosec consultant. Title: Information Security for the Weary Traveller. Abstract: "You may be a true road warrior, or you may be just a casual tourist popping to a Pacific island for a spot of sunshine in the middle of winter. Either way, you are crossing legal boundaries and almost certainly carrying an electronic device (or 2, or 7) with you. Let’s talk about that... Some of the advice provided may actually be useful, but apply your own judgement and seek advice from your organisation’s legal, privacy and information security team before running off and DES encrypting an MS Access database full of Customer data and flying to North Korea with it." Note: COMPSCI 725 students might also want to review the slideshow Dean delivered at OWASP New Zealand Day 2012, with Shahn Harris, on "An unofficial OWASP Top 10 for Managers".
  • Security in the news:
    • Group dating app 3Fun caught exposing real-time locations, private photos, Yahoo! Finance, 11 Aug 2019. "3Fun, a dating app for arranging threesomes with more than 1.5 million users, exposed sensitive information, including real-time locations and private pictures.
