14th September PUBLIC LECTURE Prof Hermann Maurer, Graz University of Technology: Computers and Globalisation 4 pm Maths/Physics building, Room MLT1. One of the potential problems of today?s global dependence on computers and computer networks is that if they fail on a massive scale (e.g. through cyber sabotage) the consequences for humanity could be traumatic. Unfortunately, such a breakdown at some point in the future seems more and more likely. There have been some substantial breakdowns of computers, networks and electricity, but nothing on the scale that Prof Maurer predicts may happen. As just one indicator, the number of computer viruses or similar programs has risen exponentially over the last 14 years from a modest 152 in 1990, to 80,000 in 2002, to 137,000 in 2003. And the number is likely to be larger than 200,000 in 2004! To avoid a large-scale failure, or to at least minimize the consequences of unchecked globalisation, Prof Maurer will suggest a three-pronged plan. A number of concrete examples will support his thesis. The first 100 attendees will get a copy of Herman newest novel "The Paranet" free. After the talk, refreshments will be served. With Hermann's reputation as a world-renowned forecaster of technological trends, and a lively speaker, you are bound to enjoy the talk.
