Date: 19 October 2004 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM Venue: Northern Club 19 Princes Street Auckland Details: NZCS Auckland Management Breakfast presents: Why isn't the Internet Secure Yet, Dammit! Peter Gutmann, University of Auckland Standards for secure email and network communications have been around for years Every Windows (and many non-Windows) desktop has S/MIME, SSL, and IPsec built in, US export controls on crypto are (effectively) gone, and yet we still see daily reports of security problems and all manner of crime and fraud being committed using Internet-connected systems. "Why isn't the Internet Secure Yet, Dammit!" looks at some of the lesser-publicised aspects of Internet security, and the security measures being applied there. Topics covered include measures to prevent automated address harvesting and use, spam-prevention techniques and problems therein, credit card fraud and online banking security issues like phishing attacks, and the use of opportunistic encryption mechanisms to provide a measure of easy-to-use and easy-to-manage security for people who wouldn't otherwise employ it. About the Speaker: Peter Gutmann is a researcher in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Auckland working on design and analysis of cryptographic security architectures. He helped write the popular PGP encryption package, has authored a number of papers and RFC's on security and encryption including the X.509 Style Guide for certificates, and is the author of the open source cryptlib security toolkit. In his spare time he pokes holes in whatever security systems and mechanisms catch his attention and grumbles about PKIs.
