Assignments: COMPSCI 314 Semester 2, City Campus

General assignment advice

  • Assignments for COMPSCI 314 are to be submitted in the Web Dropbox.
If you have a technical problem with the dropbox, please contact the class tutor before the submission deadline.
  • Your marks will be posted to Cecil.
  • You should submit all assignments on time. They will help you understand the course and prepare for the exam, and a missed assignment is likely to drop your final result by one grade. While a drop from B to B- might be OK, a drop from C- to D+ is serious. We announce the due dates well in advance so that you can plan your work, especially if you have more than one assignment due in the same week.
  • If you have questions about assignment marks, lost results and so on, these should be raised within 2 weeks of the assignment being returned. We cannot help people who complain after the exam that their assignment 1 was lost.
  • Missing assignments can make it very difficult to grant an aegrotat or compassionate pass if you have misfortune around the time of the examination.
  • Questions similar to assignments often seem to reappear in the final examination...

Cheating and Plagiarism

The Department of Computer Science has a general policy on cheating and plagiarism, within the University policy on academic honesty. Briefly, if we detect material in assignments or projects that appears to be copied from elsewhere without due acknowledgement, we will normally give zero marks for that assignment or project. Cutting and pasting without acknowledgment is not allowed. Appeals must be in writing to the Head of Department (not to the lecturer).

Warning
Several years ago in COMPSCI 314, eleven students achieved an assignment mark of 0 (zero) because of cheating and plagiarism on an assignment. In 2010, a significant number of students lost marks on Assignment 1 due to unacknowledged cut-and-paste from web pages. In 2011, despite this warning, several students lost marks on Assignment 2 for the same reason!
