-------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - last information about the final exam Date: Tue, 27 Oct 2009 09:46:40 +1300 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter Hi everybody, A surprising number of students have been asking for more information about the final exam for COMPSCI 314. I've been answering questions individually, but here is a summary, and I will not be answering any more individual questions about the exam. Please note that the final exam for COMPSCI 314 will cover the whole course, except for the material covered in the term's test. That is, the first 9 lectures by Cris Calude are not covered. The extra lecture he gave on peer-to-peer computing is examinable. There will be a short multiple choice section (5 questions) and a short answer section (7 questions). This really should not affect your preparation. All the questions are intended to test your understanding of the principles covered by the course, not memorisation of details. In general, we hope you have read the sections of Shay that cover the lectures. They are listed at http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/compsci314s2t/lectures/ and should help you to understand the lecture material. We don't expect you to learn mathematical details such as the Feistel algorithm or the theory of RSA. This is not an algebra exam. You don't need to memorise details like the pin allocations shown on one of the slides, or the commands for Wireshark. Calculators are not allowed. http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/compsci314s2t/exams/ We will post the sample answers for Assignment 3 as soon as possible. -- Regards Brian Carpenter Department of Computer Science The University of Auckland http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~brian/ -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - information about the final exam Date: Thu, 01 Oct 2009 09:07:00 +1300 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter Hi everybody, Please note that the final exam for COMPSCI 314 will cover the whole course, except for the material covered in the term's test. Also, there will be a short multiple choice section as well as a short answer section. http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/compsci314s2t/exams/ -- Regards Brian Carpenter University of Auckland -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - Assignment 2 clarification and typo Date: Thu, 10 Sep 2009 10:36:21 +1200 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter Q1 c) and Q2 a) ask about 'efficiency'. You could work that out as the effective bit rate (as in the slides), or as a percentage of the raw bit rate. The slides don't actually show percentages, but % efficiency may be easier to understand. To avoid confusion, there is no Q2 b) - the question jumps from a) to c). Sorry about that. -- Regards Brian Carpenter University of Auckland -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - Test results Date: Tue, 01 Sep 2009 15:59:14 +1200 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter The 314 term test has been marked and the results should be visible in Cecil shortly. If you want to get your script back, they will be in Dongjin's office 303-596. Also contact DongJin if you think the marks have been added up wrongly. The sample answers are at http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/compsci314s2t/exams/314-09-testSOL.pdf -- Regards Brian Carpenter University of Auckland -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - Assignment 2 is open Date: Wed, 26 Aug 2009 13:08:30 +1200 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter Just a reminder that Assignment 2 is available for you at http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/compsci314s2t/assignments/ and is due 11:59 pm, Friday 25 September, 2009. We've already covered the material (flow control) so you can get started as soon as you want. Leaving it until the afternoon of September 25th isn't such a good idea... We believe that the problems a few students had with the dropbox for Assignment 1 have been fixed. But please let DongJin know if you have the problem again: -- Regards Brian Carpenter University of Auckland -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - Assignment 1 - dropbox problems? Date: Sun, 23 Aug 2009 13:29:09 +1200 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter A few students have had trouble with the dropbox for COMPSCI314 Assignment 1. This seems to be due to a failure in the transfer of the enrolment list from Cecil. Please try the dropbox first, but if you get a failure, please email your PDF file direct to DongJin Lee . But PLEASE don't do that unless you have to, because otherwise DongJin will get a very full inbox and your assignment might get lost. Sorry about the inconvenience. -- Regards Brian Carpenter University of Auckland -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - Assignment 1 problem with ipv6.google.com Date: Fri, 21 Aug 2009 12:00:30 +1200 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter Hi, Someone has just notified me that if you try http://ipv6.google.com as suggested in Q2 b), it fails in the COMPSCI labs, with a confusing error message from the web cache. This wasn't a problem when we tested out the assignment, and it doesn't seem to be a problem in the staff offices. We'll have to investigate that, but it's too late for this assignment. You can try http://[2001:4860:b006::68] instead. That is direct access to the Google IPv6 address, and it worked for me a few minutes ago. Obviously, if you work from home, and do not have IPv6 at home, neither of these will work. But you can still answer the question Q2 b). -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - Term's test Date: Tue, 04 Aug 2009 11:51:07 +1200 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter Hi, Somebody asked: > is it possible to know some information about the test?? > like what topics are there going to be, and is past year test helpful?? The test will cover material up to the end of Lecture 9 (Data Integrity). It's always useful to look at the tests for the previous year or two, but of course the questions will not be the same. -- Regards Brian Carpenter University of Auckland -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - Change of tutor's office hours Date: Mon, 03 Aug 2009 09:39:34 +1200 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter Hi, For reasons outside his control, Dongjin Lee has to change his office hours from Monday afternoon to Friday 1-5 p.m. Room 303-596 Of course you can always contact him by email at Sorry about the short notice for this afternoon Regards Brian Carpenter -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - Windump solution Date: Tue, 28 Jul 2009 15:10:43 +1200 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter Hi everybody, If you'd like to try the WinDump examples on the lab Vista machines, here's how: 1. Download the WinDump executable file to your H directory, using this link on the COMPSCI 314 Resources page: http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/compsci314s2t/resources/WinDump.exe Then start a Windows command prompt from the Accessories menu, and type h:\windump -D or whatever WinDump commands you want. Regards Brian Carpenter -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - Windump is missing Date: Tue, 28 Jul 2009 14:05:17 +1200 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter Hi everybody, The tutorial for Assignment 1 describes how to use Windump. Unfortunately it is missing from this semester's Vista image in the labs. We'll try to provide a solution for this so that you can test out the examples, but note that Windump is NOT needed for the assignment itself. Sorry about this. Regards Brian Carpenter -------- Original Message -------- Subject: COMPSCI 314 - clarification about tutorials Date: Fri, 24 Jul 2009 10:54:10 +1200 From: Brian Carpenter Organization: University of Auckland To: Brian Carpenter Hi, A few people have asked about tutorials for CS 314. We don't have any formal tutorial sessions planned. The tutor, DongJin Lee is available to you any time by email or during his office hours already posted on the course web site: "DongJin's office is 303.596. Available from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday" There is a written tutorial document for Assignment 1, available on the assignments page . That is for private study before you start Assignment 1, and of course you can ask any questions about it to DongJin, who wrote it.
