The village Hongcun in Yixian county in the south of Anhui province is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. While Hongcun is arguably the most impressive and romantic village in this region there are many other places worth visiting. The beautiful traditional buildings in this area are considered as a living Museum of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Note that there seem to be some restrictions on foreigners. I was only allowed to stay overnight in this area after long discussions and after getting a temporary residency from the county office.
Hongcun early in the morning.
One of the narrow alleys in Hongcun. All houses are connected by little channels which provide water for cooking and washing, but which also provide cooling and are handy in case of a fire.
We were allowed to stay in one of the old buidlings which had been converted to a hostel. The accomodation was basic but very pleasant and romantic.
