The Routeburn Track takes 2-3 days and is with 38km one of the easiest and shortest Fiordland tracks. It starts at the Divide, on the road to the Milford Sound, and ends near Glenorchy at Lake Wakatipu in the Mt. Aspiring National Park. Even though you have to book the huts in advance now (book early if you want to go in the Christmas holidays) the track is still very busy. For people looking for solitude and a real nature experience this track might not be the best choice. However, the views are magnificent and the track connects good with the Milford Track (short trip by van or a day trip along the road), and the Dart-River Track.
Routeburn Valley and the Routeburne Falls Hut. If you want to have a awesome evening view, try to get a place here rather than in the Routeburne Flats Hut further down.
Lake McKenzie (1036m) with the beautiful situated Lake McKenzie Hut (on the right, just out of the picture).
View down the Hollyford Valley on the way up to Harris saddle. In the background you can see Martins Bay. Mt. Tutoko, with 2746m the highest mountain Fiordlands, is unfortunately fully cloud covered.
After crossing the Harris Saddle (1277m) you pass Lake Harris. The easy sidetrip up Conical Hill, from where the photograph is taken, is rewarded with a 360' panorama view.
