The Lower Huia Dam circle is an easy 2 hour stroll starting at the car park at the base of the Lower Huia Dam. The track crosses dense forrest, passes a little water fall, and follows for a while the Nihotopu ridge with beautiful views of the Manukau habour.
The walk starts at the car park at the base of the Lower Huia Dam. From here the walk follows the Farley Track through a densely vegetated river valley. The track continues uphill until it branches off onto the Nihotopu Ridge track and then onto the Parau track, which leads onto the top of the Lower Huia Dam.
Next to the car park is a lovely little lake with the dam in the background. The track starts a little bit further up the street and crosses the next to the road with a swinging bridge. Walk downhill to the right and you soon enter a dense forrest.
The path follows a small stream and after about 20 minutes you come across a small 7-10m high waterfall.
Shortly afterwards the track starts to wind up the valley and at the top it offers great views of the Manukau harbour and Manukau Heads. Take the turn off into the Nihotopu Ridge track and continue along the top of the ridge.
After a while the track heads downwards through a beautiful forrest with Nikau palms and Kauri trees. In many parts the track is quite muddy and slippery and special care must be taken after rain.
The track ends at the top of the Lower Huia Dam from there are nice views over the reservoir and back to Huia township.
A particularly interesting view is the one from the little walkway over the overflow. This must be quite exciting to watch after heavy rain and could make for an interesting water slide (not recommended ;-) ).
